Episode 17 – Duck And Cover

Mad Mongos Radio Soul – 17 – Duck And Cover

Next edition of my little show.
It starts off quite upbeat then going off on an apocalyptic tangent for a little while in the middle LOL where you get some US Civil Defense warning advice from Bert The Turtle accompanied to Deepchord Aeronautics tune going into “The End Of The World” from Kathy Smith. Then mellowing out with some bliss strings and chilled vibes.

Tunes to look out for include Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs – “You Need Me On My Own” my favorite from his excellent Trouble album. I can’t get enough of the Moon Bounce – Telephone tune. Wicked quirky video.

Also the Jessica Cleaves – Eyes Of A Dreamer and the brilliant Jimmy Jean tune from Ellen Mcilwaine. Plus lots of other goodies through-out which I reckon your like.

MASSIVE big boo boo though as I call Marcia Griffiths Bob Marley’s wife in the show. Of course I know it was Rita (it’s in the name πŸ™‚ ) but she was in The Wailers as the I Three’s and had silly mind blank and didn’t even notice till I had uploaded it LOL….Yep a big DOH!!! Sure they would of had a moment together at sometime though. He couldn’t keep it in his pants. Amazing with the amount of ganja he smoked that he still had the motivation for pootang.
Anyway check the wicked tune Not what your expected from the Reggae Queen

Hope you enjoy

All the best and happy vibes

Last Shop Standing Documentary

A documentary inspired by the book by Graham Jones taking a look at and trying to discover why nearly 2000 record shops have disappeared across the UK.
Interviewing the record shop owners from the likes of Borderline Records, Intoxica, Rough Trade, Sister Ray and the oldest record shop in the UK maybe world Spillers plus many more.
Plus there’s interviews from the likes of Paul Weller, Norman Cook and Billy Bragg to name a few.

I’m liking the tag line The Rise, Fall and Rebirth of the Independent Record Shop
Looking forward to watching this and seeing the changes being made for a rebirth and will keep my fingers crossed.
So sad to see so many close.

Last Shop Standing Website

Here’s the trailer.

Vinyl is still being made and LP’s are still getting produced by independent stores . I just picked myself up a copy of Earth Roots and Water – Innocent Youths from Light In The Attic records tonight. Unfortunately I haven’t a record shop which would stock it in a hundred mile radius so had to buy it online but we do have a few second hand shops potted about which are always a pleasure to browse through and support.

Sound It Out Documentary

Sound It Out – The very last record shop in Teesside. A documentary by Jeanie Finlay.
Excellent if not sad for us vinyl and crate diggers film about the surviving last record shop in Teesside.
With interviews from the owner and the charaters which embrace the shop on a regular bases.
Being shown on BBC4 tonight at 10.55pm if you get a chance to see and I would imagine up on the iplayer soon after.
Great doc even if your not a vinyl addict but like to watch films on real people even some of them are a little nuts πŸ™‚
The film was part of Record Store Day 2011 and can be purchased through their website here

From the website http://www.sounditoutdoc.com/

“A cultural haven in one of the most deprived areas in the UK, SOUND IT OUT documents a place that is thriving against the odds and the local community that keeps it alive. Directed by Jeanie Finlay who grew up three miles from the shop.

A distinctive, funny and intimate film about men, the North and the irreplaceable role music plays in our lives.”

Massive thanks to host Weeg. Mate you know I love it so thanks very much for inviting me down again.
Always brings a big smile to my face. Love the bar so much.
Hope I got round to speaking to everyone? I really tried my best.
Time flew by so fast and then it was done

The day started well with the Punk Graphics exhibition at the Hayward.
Then walked to the Getty gallery for the Hollywood Unseen.
Forgetting how insane Oxford Street is I braved the walk to the Photographers Gallery for the Tom Wood : Men and Women which was superb. Still keep thinking about them.
Then walked to Old Street accidentally stumbling upon Banksy Mr Brainwash exhibition from the doc film Exit from the Gift Shop at the Old Sorting Offices. Was weird but mad. What’s it all about? Piss take on the whole art world? All just for fun. Must cost a fortune with all the bouncers and freebees.
And Sunday The Tanks: Art in Action at the Tate Modern was superb. With the Aldo Tambellini a total mind fuck. Shit man that messed with your brainwaves. Avant garde insanity .

Normally treat myself to a curry but was so hungry and needed a boost, settled for Nandos LOL Mango and Lime sauce was nice though.

Some moments notes
* Looking over and seeing the two lovely bar girls dancing in a line behind the bar to the reggae tunes. Plus the suitcase pizza they had.
* Desperados beer not what I would normally get but went down so nice.
* Hearing Microdots and Moonbeans out on your testpress 7
* hearing Rupi’s K-Schreiber – Berman tune. You still come on here? Mate I need it
* Bummer missing Fathom esp after all the Raquel Walsh build up
* I always enjoy having a jig behind the decks even if I look a bit of a tit. If you can’t enjoy what your playing!!
* Raga Bairagi sounded mighty fine as did Young Marble Giants (I bought their Colossal Youth LP the other day, love that) oh and Regular Girl from Dillinger.
* Nodding my head to Rob’s excellent choice selections. Looking forward to seeing the tracklist to jog my memory. That was one big bag of tunes mate.
* Great to meet WallE and his lady (dude thanks for the bubbles top buzz to the head LOL)
* Meeting the gorgeous Ali. Chatting to the ever lovely Rob W. Seeing Gary and Steve again.
* Was great to see Andy aka Benny Kirk in the house with his lovely gal.
* So glad Post War Glamour Girl went done well as I ummed and rrrred but thought it’s gotta be a yeah.
* Tons of other great bits which too much booze have fogged for the time being

Oh got lost for an hour on the 10 min walk back to the hotel, but did stumble across some crazy architecture and strange places. Was an adventure.

Thanks for having me Gian.

Big love
Mike
