The Soul Mystery Volume Four

Slowly bringing over old mixes which I had on another blog. Having now shut that one down they will be coming over here so they are all in one place.

Colossus-The-Forbin-Project

Next up in my pet project investigating music with soul. This time having a helping hand from Dr. Charles A Forbin who is chief designer of a secret government project called Colossus, a gigantic supercomputer.
Colossus is very naughty and goes off on one wanting to control the whole world and putting poor Dr Forbin in a very stressful position of trying to save the whole of mankind. So as usual like the other help partners on my past projects, he ends up a little distracted and leaves the job to me. Doh!
Choons to check, the awesome sound of Smoke and the sublime tune Freedom of the Mind. The totally wicked Charles Earland tune and a weird and wacky as usual Eddie Harris track, the aptly named Loneliest Monk which seems to sum up the mood. Used to listen to it loads when stoned in my mid teens. Probably not to everyone’s tastes but when it gets going it’s got an excellent groove which is very different to the norm. Mixed in the mash up are a few easy listening tunes some lovely raw soul from the likes of Sam Dees and a folk tune or two. All in all this series offers lovely mellow tracks to chill too.

Episode 15 A Soul and Boogie edition.
A re-up with updated info, tracklist, download link and streaming.

Some top cuts from Kinky Foxx, Ameega, the wicked Guy Cuevas is a highlight too imho. Super groovy tune. I LOVE the Sun Sect tune esp when Pam joins the boys. Some choice British soul from Projection and the underrated Keni Stevens. A real grower of a tune from Courtney Buchanan and the flip side dub of Rick Clarke‘s debut 12″. The Major Harris is a fantastic piece of soul music too. One to dance your socks off too. Finish up with Leston Paul with some Trinidad instrumental boogie. If you have time to tune in, download and modern soul/boogie funk is your thing I reckon you will very much enjoy this. Hope so.

Phyllis Hyman – Living Inside Your Love

I first heard this sublime tune, from a true soul goddess, back in around 1988 on a Pirate Radio Show. Think the show was Strong Island Radio with Marc Mac from 4Hero. Whoever it was! all I know my life wouldn’t be the same again. That beauty was Phyllis Hyman and the track “Living Inside My Life“. That unforgiving rhythm and the brooding strings in the background, those horn stabs not to mention the vocal of a hundred angels contained in one body. Gorgeous scats, killer groove hitting, the all the right notes, dropping down then straight back up again. Phyllis Hyman, what a remarkable woman. Wish I could of seen her live. Yep a true soul goddess.
Stunning, beautiful and without doubt The Goddess Of Love.

From her 1978 LP called Somewhere In My Lifetime on Arista Records the amazing Living Inside Your Love

Peaches And Herb – Star Steppin

Well what can I say about this beauty! First time I heard it I was surely blown away. The YouTube uploader name is very apt, I was certainly “Slayed” by it.

That electric bass noise lightly grumbling away in the background is so delicious. Sweet sweet vocals so completely matched together. Plus you’ve got that perfect pace just plodding along with floaty noises dashed about giving you that blissed out feeling of really “Star Steppin”. Gorgeous tune.

“Star Steppin” from Peaches And Herb’s LP called “Sayin Something” recorded 1981 on Polydor Records.

Guru loved it too, he used pretty much the whole tune on “Living In This World” on his Jazzmatazz series Volume II The New Reality.

It was also featured on my first Soul Love Groove mix.

Soul Crazy 10

Soul Crazy 10 - Mad Mongos

With the Soul Love Groove series coming to an end with episode 20 I decided as the Soul Crazy series was coming up to episode 10 that I would make that one a companion piece to SLG as a bonus part.

Some real sweet soul music to keep your spirits up and dancing feet shifting especially starting off with the blinding grooves of Kleeer. Sure to bring a smile to your face.

Soul Love Groove Volume 20 – The Final Part

Soul Love Groove 20

The final chapter in the Soul Love Groove series. Been a real pleasure and a labour of love to compile over the years, searching out those soul tunes with the right stuff. It was always going to be a one off, then I went to three and decided to finish there! Then got the soul bug again and raced through to number 10 where it was definitely gonna finish. But low and behold it carried on. So now I feel that the time has come after hitting the 20 mark to rest this series. But who knows for sure!

To coincide with this finish of SLG the new soul series Soul Crazy, which is hitting it’s 10th edition in itself, will have a tribute episode of tracks which didn’t make it on the SLG series. Making it a fitting companion piece.

I can’t thank the supporters of Soul Love Groove enough, I thank you all from the bottom of my heart for the kind works of support which spurred me on to do 20 of them.

A SLG mix wouldn’t be right without a One Way tune on the last one. They really have to be one of my all time favourite soul bands. Every album has a soul gem and the band has featured pretty heavy throughout.
Plus Slave haven’t been too far away, another fine band with heaps of talent.
Shame to see that’s the first Roy Ayers tune to make it which is more down to him being in my jazz section and totally forgetting to record him. Doh! but hey its a great tune, a cover of the Bobby Caldwell classic, which by the way was on episode 6.
I think the Michele White tune is a little hidden away tune that not many people will know. Is it that great? I like it.
Bootsy brings some quirky funky love near the end.
And I just had to finish with that mellow cosmic sounding blissed out tune with the true words of Peter Brown which fitted to the end of this mix, Without Love (Cold Is The Season, Lonely Is The Heart)

Hope you enjoy the grooves and be sure to look out for Soul Crazy 10 coming this week.

The Soul Just Drives Me Crazy Part 8

The new edition to the Soul Crazy series is number 8. The usual mix of Modern Soul, Boogie, 80’s Funk and UK Street Soul.

IMG_20141120_215314

Some absolute blinders on here like the Pamela Nivens and Neddy Smith bombs. Plus the Kevin McCord track at the end is just simply beautiful. That was a new track for me and I can’t say or see why or how I hadn’t heard it before. Been waking up with it playing in my head. A good way to start the day. On constant rewind.

The Isabel Roberts track starts a little loud on the down beat bass but it does mellow out as the track goes along.
Another joy to compile I really do hope you enjoy listening.
Big love Mike

Personal Reasons Personalised

I love doing mixes, makes me check my records, makes me listen to the track in full with out the constant need to flick through, something I’m extremely bad at. Makes me dig and research about artists, buy new records and share my love of music.
But above all these things I love the most is meeting and becoming friends with like minded musical people. No more so when they send you a lovely gift like what I received this week from not one but two fantastic fellas. I salute you Colin Wildcat and Delasy Studio8. Little back story here on a past post

This is what I got 🙂
A super personal 12″ of Wildcat Personal Reasons from 1991 and straight off the press brand spanking new DVD music video of Personal Reason Vol 5 from the Wildcat Studios.

IMG_20141027_154855

The back of the DVD features this inspiring line.

“Music is my soul, the rhythm of life inspires me”
This is my “Personal Reason” for doing the work I love and loving the work I do

What a great quote. plus check out the message on the twelve inch.
Yep I was very happy receiving this, what a great day.

You can catch Delasy Studio8 on Tower Block Radio playing soul, lovers rock and all manner of soulful tunes on a Monday night from 9pm. Tune in if you can. He has a lovely friendely vibe with some great stories.
Colin has the Wildcat Studio LTD set up in the idyllic settings of Nevis in the Caribbean. Looks nothing less than beautiful out there. The perfect place to create music.

Many thanks Delasy and Colin really means a lot guys.

All the best and happy vibes
