This is Brit Jazz Funk Part 3

This is Brit Jazz Funk Part 3
Yep they are coming quick and swift this week.
More soulful Brit Jazz Funk Soul.
Yeh more happy grooves to make you move.
Check a rather different take on Lonnie Listons Smith‘s Expansions from Chris Paul. I love it but it takes a few goes to get into I think.
Big tune to cover especially in a 80’s style jam. Respects for trying.
Reckon your love the Toba and the Side On tunes. Some real strong grooves.
One more to come! Will try and sort over the weekend.
Hope you enjoy the music.

I have a facebook page if you do that HERE. It’s a good way to say up to date on mixes.

Part 4 nearly ready 🙂

Track List

Light of the world – Aspects – Ensign records – 79
Their amazing debut lp is a must for any collection. “Mirror of my soul” and “Dreams” are also my top fav’s from this recording. Brit funk at it’s best.

Nigel Martinez – Better things to come – State records – 78
Quite scarce and underrated album from Nigel Martinez. Some really lovely soul music from this very American looking lp. Sadly I believe to be his only recording? I hope not, please contact me if you know any more goods.

Julie Roberts – Ain’t you had enough love – Bluebird – 85
The lovely voiced Julie from Working Week fame does a sublime job of this Loose Ends written ditty. Which Phyllis Hyman covered on “Living all alone” LP.

Junior – Is this love – Mercury records – 82
This tunes is wicked. Goes down and sounds so good today. Easily my favorite by him. Check it out.

Chris Paul FT David Joseph – Expansions – Fourth & Broadway – 86
Quite a mental and brave version of the classic Lonnie Liston Smith classic. I love the scatting.

Side On – Magic – Beggers Banquet – 82
Great happy tune. I’ve loved this for years and have been searching for the right price. Was very happy to be able to add this to the collection recently.

Level 42 – The Pursuit of accidents – Polydor – 82
Wicked slap bass duties from the Level 42 boys. Also check “Starchild” from 1981

Steve Harvey – Something special – London – 83
Scottish soul boogie at it’s best. Love this tune. Check his “Tonight” as well.

Touch – Love Something special – Elite records – 82
Quite a sort after tune now which can go for silly money. Happy with the 20p I luckily got it for.

Osibisa – Moving On – Calibre – 80
Total shock when I first found out these guys were from the UK. Still shocked to be honest. Not a bad tune for the disco funky scene. A good groove and the usual wicked horns and flute to add.

Canute – Turn it up (Instrumental) – Loose Ends records – 83
Canute Edwards was the guitarist on Linx. “Turn it up” is a great play out boogie tune. Pure groover.

Freeez – Keep in touch – Calibre – 80
Mad grooving up and down tune from the talented Freeez produced and led by John Rocca. This is there first release I believe.

Cayenne – Fires in the valley – Coda Records – 86
Some great sounding classic style British Jazz funk horns in da place. From the lp “Hot Nights”.

Roy Gee & Energee – Im for real – Beggars Banquet – 82
Released on 12″ on the Injection Disco Dance Label. I have it on the best of British Jazz funk volume 2 compilation lp from the same year.

Toba – Moving up – Connection – 82
Wicked tune from Toba. 12″ on blue vinyl and goes for quite big money nowadays. Which I only found out recently. Head bopper tune. Featured on my Soul Boogie Encounter part 2 last year.

Second Image – Cool Breeze – Polydor – 81
Man I love this group. This is a boogie affair with jazz, electric sounds and a touch of reggae almost.

Second Image – Don’t you – MCA – 83
Had to add this one as it brings back so many memories of the Robbie Vincent shows as he used it as his main jingle.

Here’s a great live video of Chris Paul FT David Joseph – Expansions (Thanks to neofunkyman1 for the upload)

This is Brit Jazz Funk Part Two

This is Brit Funk Part Two
More classic UK Jazz Funk from the record shelves. Yeh some are a little cheesy but they are filled to the brim with good vibes.
Part one is here if you missed it http://www.madmongos.com/this-is-brit-jazz-funk-part-1/
Part 3 coming very soon and for the first time upload part 4 (it was uploaded on the old Brownswood forum just before it went down and was lost) has been found on my hard drive but I can’t find the track list! So I need to go through that and ID the tunes. Might be a little while but kick me up the bum to speed me along if you need the Brit Funk buzz soon.
Enjoy.

The Cool notes always had a nice vibe to their tunes. Plus cover features two very lovely ladies;-))

A trio of very cheesy looking guys. But a very good tune produced by Phil Fearon.

Not a bad lp with a few funky tunes like “Boogie on up” “Shack up” and a cover of “Brick house” to name a few.

Shakatak – Cosmic mellow? Polydor? White Label – 80? – 12″
Pretty sure it’s the “Steppin” tune on the a-side and “Killing time” on the flip. But I can’t find any info on this white label that has a second tune of the b-side. No idea what it is? So have named it Cosmic Mellow. If you know any info please get in contact. I got an update from a kind listener who gave me the info I needed “The last tune on Part 2 from Shakatak is ‘Lumiere’ from the ’81 album Drivin’ Hard!” Thanks Anonymous said… on the 6th of October 2010 🙂

Jamaican Digital Early 90’s Computer Dub

All from seven inch vinyl B-sides here’s a selection of digital dub from Jamaica. The Uk was just starting to pull out all the stops on the digi dub scene at the tail end of the 80’s to the beginning of the 90’s but the JA digi scene had a certain RAW ness to them. To be enjoyed very loud with the bass as full as humanly possible for the full effect these tunes are different. Probably not to everyone taste but I’m sure they grow on you. These where all brought from the likes of The Dub Shack in Camden Lock, Daddy Kool record in Soho and Youth Sounds on Stroud Green Road. Expect some wicked basslines deep electro style synth keyboards and some great vibes.
Shout me what you think? Hope you enjoy. Happy vibes……….Mike

This is Brit Jazz Funk Part 1
With some soul to boot.

Wobbling back from the Pub one Friday night I had a bad urged to hear Light of the Worlds – Don’t Run.
By 4.30am it had turned into a Brit Funk revival session.
The mix was nearly 3 hours long and had to be split in half as it was too big to upload. Lots left out and only wanted to put one tune from each group on, which was difficult to say the least.
Which one do you choose from a band like Second Image? So pretty much went for the 1st ones I came too.
They are not mixed in so feel free to cut and paste any that might be missing from your collection.
Plus give me a shout if you like to listen to a b-side cut or something. All from the original vinyl.
Hence no FBI as I only have that on MP3. And not sure if K.I.D where from the UK or not otherwise “Don’t stop” would of been included. Lots missing but had to stop somewhere .
Hope you enjoy the FUNK – Brit style.
I will the other parts over the next week.

Mad Mongos Radio Soul – 18 – Soul Seekers by Mad Mongos Radio Soul on Mixcloud

Here’s the new edition of the show, number 18 entitled Soul Seekers. I tried to keep myself on track this time as I do have a tendency of going off kilter.

A few things to look out for and notes on the mix.

Check Meitz from Germany, a great George Duke feel to this beautiful piece of lush music, very recommended.
You got some feel good sounds from Billy Cobham and Oh Mendocino (I had to look up where that was, it’s in California and looks bliss). You think it going to go cheesy then it goes wicked then it changes again and a bit more cheese then you get some great strings! always changing but keeping a good happy buzz, features Jill Gilstrasp on vocals.
Flutist Tim Weisberg brings the funky goods with an uptempo tune called Power Rocket using some great echo technique.
Then we come on to Bob Welsh with this great vibed tune. I had this song recommended to be recently and feel in love with it straight away. Picked up the lp for a few pounds as soon as I could. A former member of Fleetwood Mac would you believe. The rest of the lp is pretty pants to be honest 🙂
Still upsets me with the lose of Jimmy Abney, one lp recorded before he died! So unfortunate but what a debut lp. I caned it through-out 2008. “Is There Anybody There” and “Hello” being one my favs closely followed by the lovely Leon Ware and Marvin Gaye inspired “Come Go With Me” A classic lp essential for everyone’s collection.
Funk Inc haven’t been on my decks for many many years. The shame! How I loved listening to “God Only Knows” again. Tune.
Don’t be put off my seeing Billy Preston in there! I bet “Bells” has been missed by a lot of people but it’s really great song. Nice touches of his token synth playing. Sweet vocals too. Same goes for the Gary Toms Empire tune, sure that would go down a treat on the Northern Soul scene and help to tear up a rug!!
Then there’s that awesome “I’ll Slip Away” from Rodriquez. Can’t recommended the “Searching For Sugar Man” documentary enough. Go see it go see it go see it. I did a little post on my blog http://www.madmongos.com/searching-for-sugar-man/
I hope I hit a good selection of different era’s and styles of soul in there and wrap it all up with some mellow soul jazz flute from Hilary.

Hope you enjoy.
Many thanks, all the best and happy vibes

SOUL LOVE GROOVE NUMBER 13 by Mad Mongos Radio Soul on Mixcloud

Another trip down the Soul Love Groove high-ways

Slave – The way you love is heaven – Cotillion [The Concept]
Seemed an apt start to the mix. The way you love is heaven. Simple.
The Jones Girls – You Can’t Have My Love – Philadelphia International Records [Keep It Comin]
They always delivery a goody does this lovely trio of ladies.
Apollo – Hungry Eyes – Gordy [Apollo]
Just a superb rare groove soul tune, heads up to Snoopy for nodding me on to this tune from a past mix.
William DeVaughn – Kiss and make up – Roxbury Records [Be Thankful For What You Got]
So many classics from this guy with the smooth voice. A beauty for sure.
Sky – Love came along – EMI [Sky]
Not the boogie soul classic Skyy but a not so known group on EMI records. A German only release maybe. Super tune. I only have the MP3 of this one and have been searching for sometime but it just not seem to pop up. Any info on this group would be much appreciated.
The Sylvers – Ain’t no doubt about it – Capitol Records [Something Special]
One of my top favs of theirs.
Passage – You Can’t be Livin’ Without the Lord A&M [Passage]
Christian soul, a differnet kind of love but still soul love.
Central Line – Girl – Mercury 12″
Amazing beauty Brit soul maybe missed but a must check.

Ranking Deejay Sound Clash Part One by Mad Mongos Radio Soul on Mixcloud

Did this mix sometime back for a podcast called A Deeper Groove run by a nice guy called Joc. There is a part two which I will upload here soon but can be found on my MIXCLOUD PAGE

Tracklist
Linvale Thompson – Natty Dread – Burning Sounds 12″
Kicking off with the bass heavy Natty Dread the B side to “Rocking Vibration. Linval’s classics include “I Love to Smoke Marijuana” and “Don’t Cut Off Your Dreadlocks” but this one always hits the spot. Wicked play out tune.

Michael Campbell – Barber Saloon – Power Disc 7″
Killer tune. One of my absolute favourites. Bad ass tune. “He cut off his dreads then he turned bold head” Classic….. Also known as Mikey Dread and the Dread at the Controls. Love the way he does a little laugh every once and a while during the track.

Twinkle Brothers – Jahova featuring Sir Lee – Twinkle 12″
Jahova is a pure reggae anthem. This is a great take on the tune with Sir Lee toasting along side the tune. Sir Lee also featured on the great “Free Africa” tune from the Twinkle Bro’s. Another fav of mine is the massive “Faith can move mountains”

Al Capone – Rock Them Capone – Jackpot 7″
Boss tune from Dennis Alcapone. Was a friend with Dillinger who went under the name of Young Capone at the time before he changed it to the now Dillinger. Wicked label Jackpot, loads of great sounds came out from that camp.

Sister Nancy – Papa Dean – Techniques 7″
Wicked dj style from Sister Nancy on producer Winston Riley Techniques label. Mad tune from 1980. “Papa Dean wanna give me sardine Papa Dean wanna give me Butter Bean”

Dillinger – Stumbling Block – Black and White 7″
Dillinger always brings the goods. Another fav of mine along with the classic “Melting pot”. His Lp Top Ranking Dillinger on the Third World label produced by Bunny Lee is highly recommended.

Jah Thomas – Positive Vibration – Strong Like Sampson 12″
Taken the second part from Dave Robinson’s “Positive Vibration” on Linval’s Thompson Strong Like Sampson label. Jah Thomas had his own label “Midnight Rock” which he did the wicked mellow tune “Sweet Memories” with the Roots Radics.

Ranking Trevor – Give Thanks and Praise unto Jah – Greensleeves 12″
Big tune. Loved playing this out. I need to check his Cha Cha lp which he co did with Trinity with the fantastic title ” Three Pieces Chicken and Chips”. Sound like it should be a classic.

Jah Woosh – Keep us down in Poverty – Groove Music 12″
Amazing dj voice. Jah Woosh has always been one of my top toasters. Used to cain “Crooked Skank” from the 1974 Cactus label self titled lp. Also love his “Marijuana world tour” LP.

U Brown – Ape Man Skank – Jamaica Sounds lp
A cool cut from Mr U Brown taken from the DJ Spots compilation album. Great lp featuring Dillinger, Jah Stitch and Trinity.

Trinity – John saw them coming – Belmont Records 7″
Produced by legend Joe Gibbs. This dread tune can also be found on his “Three Piece Suit” album from 1977. Wicked dub on the flip side called “Roots Kunta Kintye” by Joe Gibbs and the Professionals.

Lee Van Cliff – Different Fashion – Dance Hall Records 7″
Finishing off with some classic rhythm – BIM. Also can be found on the 1982 Germain Revolutionary Sounds label record “Reggae Sunsplash” BIM.

Here’s a download link for the mix here at MEDIAFIRE

Hope you enjoy the noise.
All the bets and happy vibes

Carnastoan UK Reggae Band

Killer uk roots band who to the best of my knowledge only released one 12″ which was produced by the mighty Dennis Bovell. Looks like it’s their own independent release on Carnastoan Roots label. A nice loud pressing bringing out the rawness of their musical talent. This is gritty urban reggae at it’s most finest.
When the halfway point hits on each side, the dubs smack you in the chops with their heavy heavy groove. “Sweet Melody” bubbling along with it’s infectious and uplifting righteous lyrics with a mad background of grinding squeaks and touches of organ with that awesome bass line. The dub echos around the 5 min mark on-wards are formidable.
Then there’s the heavier slightly darker “Mr Workhard” the title says it. On this B side there’s more bleeps and a heavier skank. Your find it very hard not to bop to this. More loud crossover echos and drop outs make this twelve inch a master piece of reggae dub music. Have a listen I’ve uploaded it to my youtube channel jazzstafari.

Side A – Sweet Melody

Side B – Mr Workhard

Carnastoan” Patois for Cornerstone! Well this is most definitely the case. Again don’t quote me but I believe they were from Birmingham and I just learnt that they played in my home town of Bournemouth around 1981, cheers for the info Paul. I was too young unfortunately and didn’t get into reggae until I was 16 in 1987. Weirdly Bournemouth had a brilliant little reggae scene going on in the early 80’s with loads of bands playing the Town Hall of all places plus a venue called The Midnight Express. Talisman, Aswad (Brinsley Ford moved down here for sometime, our local celeb:) ), Misty In Roots, Capital Letters and unbelievably Lee Scratch Perry and Eek A Mouse I’ve heard. The more I think about it the more gutted I become. Who of thought Bournemouth was once cool!!

Feel free to contact me with any info on them. Would love to hear more.
A related mix I’ve done which might be of interest. LINK HERE
Part two is promised sometime soon.

They did a couple of John Peel Sessions one of them has been thankfully uploaded by “invinciblesticks” on his youtube channel. Respects.

Thanks for reading
All the best and happy vibes

Theremin : An Electronic Odyssey

Theremin : An Electronic Odyssey

What can be said about this device. Not many instruments are as mad, twisted up and above all futurist as the totally bonkers Theremin.
Invented by Russian inventor Leon Theremin in the late 1920’s, the by product of research into proximity sensors. What came was a musical instrument like none other! you don’t actually touch and have physical contact with it. Turn the thing on, stand in front of it and move your hands around like a conductor looking like your playing an invisible violin and different frequency pitched noises emerge. One hand changing sounds the other the volume and back and forth creating this beautiful alien sound.
Even now it looks like it’s from another dimension, wouldn’t be out of place on an episode of Buck Rogers in the 25th Century or even a surprise to see it used in the constellation of Orion calling the sky Whales of Rigel.

Must of been an incredible sight to see. Here is a short video of Leon Theremin demonstrating it’s musical gift.

If you can get the chance to the documentary film directed by Steven M Martin in 1993 it’s a great piece of history with excellent footage and interviews with a very old but still sprite Mr Theremin. Anyone who knows me knows I’m a sucker for and love documentary films. Can’t get enough of them. Wish I could store all the information in my head but unfortunately most of it floats away but the joy stays and this was another joyful watch.

A great quote from Clara Rockmore – performance musician.
“Don’t forget that you are dealing with air! Think of your fingers as delicate butterfly wings, and you will get much further than if you use strength”

There are some amazing resource sites out there with these two Thereminvox.com and Oddmusic.com both good places to start.

One of my favorite science fiction film The Day The Earth Stood Still from 1951 uses the Theremin in it’s score.
