Mad Mongos Radio Soul – 20 – The Mescaline Experiment

Here is episode 20 of The Mad Mongos Radio Soul Show entitled The Mescline Experiment.

Bit of a drug induced musical trip helped along the way with a tour down the Time Tunnel and words of experimental old boy drug taking from Humphry Osmond and Christopher Mayhew. I do
have to add that its all just for fun and kids “Just say NO” πŸ™‚

There’s some fine music to be had on this mix and also some very shocking discoveries along the way with some names you might be very surprised at. Nothing floored me more than the Bill Hicks tune. Massive fan of the genius stand-up comedian for many many years. I was listening to a podcast from a stand-up called Tom Rhodes who does these excellent interviews and I had the episode on at work with the interview with Bill Hicks brother Steve. Well after some great stories the end of part one finished and this tune came on with a mellow southern folky feel and floaty vocals of The Moon Is Smiling I was knocked back when it hit me it was Bill Hicks. Great podcast link HERE.

Next up on the “you what! are you sure!” meter is Ram John Holder and the fantastic funky bluesy wine downing groove about a certain London town, Brixton Blues. Well Ram John Holder is none other than Pork Pie from the classic 80’s sitcom Desmond’s. Yep crazy. I love his raw style. He also did the soundtrack to John Boorman film called Leo The Last from 1970 (cheers for the recommend Weeg) The track in the film which must be called Jasper’s Temple is incredible and I would love to get my hands on that OST but I can’t find any info on it! Did it ever get a release? Let me know if you know please.

Black-London-Blues

Then the next shocker has to be Chubby “The Twist King” Checker. From all I can read into this lp is that Chubby Checker felt the need to change his image and went full out psychedelic and rock influenced. Not sure if he really has it in his catalogue but it’s been released anyway most probably as bootlegs. It’s great to be able to hear this fine recordings though and Stoned In The Bathroom is a hard hitting slice of rock and raw soul and gives a different picture of the man, for the better too.

Many other treats to be had along the way to look out for are the Hannibal – Winds Of Change tune is a fine English prog rock band which I believe are from Birmingham.
The album I picked up a few months back from a blues spoken word poet guy called Kain. It really does have the best title ever Black Satin Amazon Fire Engine Cry Baby they really don’t come much better than that hey? Great lp would sit nice next to your The last Poets records especially as he was one of the founding members.

Japanese rock outfit Buffalo Daughter drop this amazing tune called Moog Stone which is filled with beautiful off kilter analogue sounds. I love this tune and the keyboards. This girl band has been going for many years, right back from 1993. The band focuses on mixing up rock and electronic sounds. They have had a connection with The Beastie Boys with releasing a few records on the Grand Royal label.

I have to admit to not knowing the Tommy James And The Shondells tune until last year when the phenomenal series Breaking Bad dropped it on the the first half of season 5. Breaking bad has always had a knack of picking fine music to fit into different scenes. They always hit well and the Crystal Blue Persuasion tune over the sequence of crystal blue meths being made was a pure genius move. A gorgeous psychedelic rock soft poppy tune which you can’t help but fall in love with. It was a perfect choice for the Breaking Bad episode but is it about drugs? Well they say it wasn’t “according to Tommy James’s manager, James was actually inspired by his readings of the Book of Ezekiel” I’ve recently found out that there has been some notable covers version too. One by Latin man Tito Puente and the harmony reggae group The Heptones.

That tune leads in the brilliant named The West Coast Pop Art Experimental Band out of Los Angeles. They were a real mixed bag of members and tunes, ranging from straight up pop to rock and hard edged psych. Their first lp called Volume One on Fifo records was a very limited pressed lp and out of the few copies that still exist one went for 15,000 dollars back in early 2000s. Now all the albums have been reissued so you can pick them up a little cheaper.
Their track The Smell Of Incense is a great example of their work

Plus had to add a film rip recording from Midnight Cowboy and the psychedelic party scene. 7 minutes of one of the great drug induced party scenes filmed with the Elephants Memory tune Old Man Willow flowing in and out. Up there with one of my top films ever with a superb soundtrack. A deep film of friendship and the journeys that they bring. If you not seen it track it down and give it a whirl plus pick up the OST it goes for peanuts and is essential.

Your sure also to love the Freeport, Donovan and be sure to check the last tune from Ariel Pink’s Haunted Graffiti tune at the end of the mix, Baby. And I think but don’t quote me also features Dam Funk! It’s such a great cover version of the track originally recorded by Donnie & Joe Emerson on the Enterprise and Co label but lucky has been reissued by those great folk at Light In The Attic.

Hope you enjoy this journey through the sound vortex. As always they are fun to do but finding the time is always tricky so please bare with me for the lateness of editions. ideally I would like to them monthly but it’s a when and as soon as I can thing at the moment but please pop back if you enjoy the shows and want to hear more. Hope to have a twitter feed set up soon so that might be a good way to keep up to date, plus I have a Facebook page or drop me an email.

Once again I would like to thank you for downloading and I wish you all the best and happy vibes.

Big Love

Mike
